North American Technician Excellence Program (NATE)
NATE was founded in February 1997 " as an independent, non-profit national organization supported by a broad-based coalition of industry leaders including contractors, distributors, education/training providers, manufacturers, trade associations, utilities, and wholesalers. NATE's certification tests are developed by representatives from all these industry facets and reflect a consensus of opinion on what the average technician should know in order to effectively install and service HVAC/R systems.*"
In June 1999, the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) and the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES) merged their certification programs with NATE, establishing NATE as the major HVAC/R technician certification program. The new examinations are called the NATE Air Conditioning Excellence (ACE) exams. NATE ACE examinations are now available, and consist of a core exam and five specialty examinations: air conditioning, heat pumps, air distribution, oil heating, and gas heating. Examinations are available for both Installation and Service Technicians. (Technicians that take and pass the heat pump specialty also earn certification in air conditioning.)
